Recertification/CPD

The Council is responsible for ensuring that practitioners are competent and fit to practise Chinese medicine. One of the ways that it does this is by requiring practitioners to meet the requirements of recertification/continuing professional development (CPD) programmes set by the Council.

A recertification programme is the name given to the set of activities and processes that the Council requires you to undertake or satisfy, on an ongoing basis, to demonstrate that you are continuing to maintain your competence to practice. This includes participating in CPD.

The Council consulted on its proposed compulsory recertification/CPD programme for Chinese medicine practitioners prior to its implementation. A summary of this consultation can be found here.

The following policy and guidance has been approved:

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Policy for Chinese Medicine Practitioners

Mandatory CPD pre 2026-27 APC Renewals

To support all registrants in meeting the Council’s CPD Policy and audit standards, the Chinese Medicine Council of New Zealand has introduced a new mandatory learning activity: completion of the “Confident CPD: Understanding and Meeting Your Annual Requirements” Webinar and Quiz.

All practitioners must complete this year’s compulsory CPD module. This includes:

  1. Watching the full webinar, and
  2. Completing the short online quiz linked at the end.

Please follow the instructions below carefully to avoid access issues.

1. Watch the webinar

You must watch the entire webinar recording before attempting the quiz.

At the end of the video, you will see a slide containing:

  • A QR code, and
  • A web link to the quiz

Both methods take you to the same SurveyMonkey quiz.

2. Access the quiz

You can complete the quiz in one of two ways:

Option A — Scan the QR code

  1. Open the camera on your mobile phone.
  2. Hover it over the QR code shown at the end of the webinar.
  3. Tap the link that appears to open the quiz.

Option B — Click or type in the link

This link is public and does NOT require any login.

⚠ Important – Do NOT open the quiz through your work Microsoft account

Some practitioners have reported seeing a message like this:

“AADSTS90072: User account does not exist in tenant… cannot access Office 365 SharePoint Online…”

This happens when:

  • You try to open the SurveyMonkey link inside your work Microsoft 365 account, such as from
    • your work Outlook inbox,
    • your work SharePoint, or
    • your clinic’s Microsoft Teams environment.

Your work Microsoft account belongs to your clinic’s Microsoft tenant, not CMCONZ’s tenant.
When Microsoft detects a link opening from inside its system, it incorrectly assumes you are trying to access a protected Council SharePoint site, even though the quiz is NOT hosted in Microsoft.

This is why you may see the error.

If you receive this error, here’s how to fix it

Try one of the following:

✅ Option 1: Open the link in a private/incognito window

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+N (Mac)
  • Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Safari: Cmd+Shift+N
Then paste in the quiz link.

✅ Option 2: Copy and paste the link directly into your browser

Instead of clicking it from your email, copy:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GVT9BCL

Paste it into your address bar.

✅ Option 3: Scan the QR code on your phone

This opens the quiz outside your work Microsoft account, which avoids the error completely.

🚫 Do NOT try to sign in with a Microsoft, Outlook, or work email account.

The quiz does NOT require a login and SurveyMonkey does not need any authentication.

3. Complete your quiz

After completing all questions:

  • Click Submit at the bottom of the page.
  • A confirmation message will appear.

The Council automatically receives a record of each submission. No certificate of completion will be issued.

If you wish to claim one CPD hour for this activity, you must log this activity in your MyCMCNZ CPD portal. You do not need to attach evidence for this CPD submission.

Need help?

If you have questions about logging CPD or how to access the Practice Standards, please contact the Council admin team.

Cultural Safety and Cultural Competency

The Council requires evidence of successfully passing the following four courses developed by Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora either prior to, or within six months of registering.

To do so you will need to create a login at Ko Awatea Learn Ko Awatea LEARN.

1. Understanding bias in health care - HNZ

This free online course is an introduction to bias in health care. It includes three video learning modules on bias that have been developed for people working in the health care sector who engage directly with consumers or who influence the way health organisations are managed.

These modules encourage health professionals to examine their biases and how they affect the health care they provide, their interactions with consumers, and therefore their health outcomes.

2. Foundations in Cultural Competency

This free online course is for health practitioners on cultural competency.

This course will take you on a journey with someone who has never been to New Zealand before. Along with your travel buddy, you will explore culture, the cultural history of New Zealand and see how culture can affect health and health care.

The course has four interactive modules followed by an assessment.

3. Module 1 | Ngā Paerewa Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Two eLearning modules to support health and disability service providers to implement the criteria linking to cultural safety. Both modules have been developed in partnership with the sector and Te Apārangi: Māori Partnership Alliance (Te Apārangi) to ensure they are fit for purpose. Both modules are free and available from Ko Awatea Learn.

4. Module 2 | Ngā Paerewa Te Tiriti eLearning

Once you have completed the courses, please email your certificates to the Council’s secretariat for recording purposes. These can be emailed to [email protected]

First Aid

Clinical competence also requires that CM practitioners maintain currency in first aid certification relevant to safety in clinical practice. First Aid Certification, and recertification can count towards your CPD point total.

Practitioners should complete courses which have both New Zealand Qualifications Authority unit standards:

• 6401/26552 Provide First Aid, and

• 6402/26551 Provide resuscitation.

First Aid certificates are valid for two years after which practitioners are required to do a refresher course to maintain current.

There are many providers delivering the First Aid courses to obtain the required certificates.

These include but are not limited to:

• St John: First Aid Level 1

• New Zealand Red Cross: Comprehensive First Aid

• Meditrain Ltd: Workplace First Aid.
